Generate new ideas for early-stage content by researching YouTube ranks
Coming up with new early-stage content ideas can be a challenge, especially when you feel like you have written about every possible topic already. YouTube can be a great—and frequently untapped—resource for discovering early-stage content ideas. YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world and many consumers go to YouTube before Google when they need to ask a question. Seeing where YouTube is owning search results for a topic can help businesses like yours better understand what early stage-content their customers are searching for.
You can use the Rank Comparisons report to measure your sites performance for your tracked keywords against YouTube’s performance for those keywords. You can use what you learn to develop new early-stage content to compete with those ranking videos on YouTube.
- In Conductor, go to Rank Comparisons↗️.
- Choose your preferred date range and—if there is a particular topic about which you want to focus your efforts—select a keyword group.
- Where it says You vs, remove any pre-existing selections and select youtube.com. You can start to type “youtube” in the search bar and you should see it in the list below. Additionally, if it’s not already a comparison web property, consider adding YouTube as a competitor in Conductor by clicking on the plus sign next to youtube.com in the You vs selector.
- In the quick filters above the table, select Behind the Competition. This will filter the table to show you exactly where you rank behind YouTube in the search results for keywords you track.
- Review the data in the table. Use the search bar above the table to search for common question phrases that indicate early-stage queries, such as “how” or “what”. This can help you discover early-stage keywords YouTube is winning results for—and which you can target for new content.
